7 W's

In short

The 7 W’s, also known as the seven questions, are a set of questions often used to gather or analyse information. The seven W’s are: who, what, where, when, why, how and with what.

What are the 7 W’s?

These questions are meant to get a complete picture of an issue, which makes it easier for people to organise, analyse and interpret information. They are often used in journalism, research and analysis.

The 7 W’s and marketing

The 7 W’s can be used in marketing to get a complete picture of a service or brand. That lets you collect and analyse targeted information.

The 7 W’s can be used, for example, to gather information about the target market, competitors and market developments.

The 7 W’s can also be useful when developing a marketing strategy. It is also useful when carrying out marketing activities, as it creates a well-organised framework.

Need help using the 7 W’s? Then follow the steps below:

Decide which subject you want to organise and analyse your information around. This could be a service, brand, event or another basis, for example.

Ask the seven questions of yourself or of others to share key information. For example, look for answers to questions such as:

  • Who are the target audience, competitors and other important stakeholders?
  • What is the thing, service or brand, and what are its features and purposes?
  • What is the market situation and where is the product, service or brand being introduced?
  • When is the product, service or brand launched and what are the timelines and plans?
  • Why is the product, service or brand unique?
  • What are the reasons for its success or failure?
  • How is the product, service or brand advertised, and which marketing tactics and initiatives are used?
  • How does the product, service or brand compare, and who are the rivals and what is their stock?

Analyse the information and look for a pattern.

The 7 W’s help you get your target audience into focus, and the 6 P’s do the same for your offering. Our team answers your questions.
